JBS offers suitably qualified native English speakers with proven technical backgrounds the opportunity to train on-the-job as Technical Writers. If accepted (see acceptance criteria and process below), you will be paid at an hourly rate as you develop into a JBS Staff Technical Writer under our mentorship. Typically, successful JBS interns transition to the role of Junior Technical Writer—at higher salaries—within 1-3 months, and can be performing at a professional level and earning competitive rates within 6-12 months.

Over the years, we have come to realize that the most important training is on-the-job. And we’ve also identified a kind of “tipping-point” at which a trainee evolves into an independent, skilled employee. So, with that in mind, and to prove that we view your success as our success, we are offering bonuses to trainees when they meet these milestones:

  • Upon completing 500 hours of actual work (not training), within 8 months of starting work, you will receive a bonus of 2,000 NIS.
  • Upon completing 1,000 hours of actual work (not training), within 12 months of starting work, you will receive an additional 3,000 NIS bonus.

Why Should You Become a Technical Writer?

Israel’s hi-tech market is booming and offering amazing work opportunities. But sometimes English speaking engineers find it hard to find work in their specific field. This could be for many reasons: the programming language or technical area you worked in before coming to Israel is not in demand here, you have been out of the work force but want to get back in, or cultural and language barriers make it difficult (see Case Studies below).

Case Studies

Mark made aliyah from Australia at age 27. He had a bachelor’s degree in Information Technologies and a few years of work experience in a tech support role. He had written some documentation in his job before making aliyah and enjoyed the challenges of communicating technical ideas in a clear, effective manner. After 3 months of paid training at JBS, Mark began working full-time, as a JBS employee, at a promising cybersecurity start-up in Tel Aviv where his managers speak highly of his work. He enjoys ongoing mentoring from JBS.


Aliza recently graduated from the Weizmann Institute with an MA in Biochemistry. Unsatisfied with the job offers she was receiving, Aliza was intrigued about the possibility of working in hi-tech. As a native English speaker, she approached JBS and applied for the OTJ Paid Internship Program. Aliza’s analytical skills, familiarity with scientific methodologies and technical concepts and natural ability to communicate at a high level, have sent her right into the fast track. Less than three months after beginning her training, Aliza is a full-time Staff Technical Writer working on projects related to autonomous vehicles and intelligence gathering tools.


Karen holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering. However, after a 20 year break from the workforce, during which she raised a beautiful family, Karen felt that it would not be right to pursue work in engineering. With her strong aptitude for things technical, Karen came up to speed at JBS while working on a range of interesting projects. After one year of working with Karen, we were sad to see her go but happy that she found high-paying, full-time work at a large company near her home.


Rachel, like Karen, had taken a hiatus from work. Holding a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science, Rachel worked as a mainframe programmer for about 5 years before taking a long break for family reasons. After completing a technical writing course, Rachel joined JBS and has been a star with JBS clients ever since. While her kids are older now, Rachel still wants time with the family and works in a job that allows her to be onsite 80% of the time and work the remaining hours from home.


After a 15-year career as a software developer in the US, Danny and his family fulfilled their dream and made aliyah. After a few months looking for work, Danny had to face reality. The programming language on which he’d based his career back in America is barely used in Israel. Danny recently joined the JBS team. He is working on a large-scale SDK project and an architecture specification for an innovative automotive project. He is enjoying his work very much.

How Does JBS Screen Candidates?

Acceptance to the program is based on progressing through the following phases:

  1. Demonstrating suitable technical background (a degree or certificate of studies in a technical field and/or work experience in a related field)
  2. Proving qualification, based on your initial application
  3. Interviewing by phone
  4. Passing a written test
  5. Meeting in a face-to-face interview

** You may continue other work or studies during training, but during the initial phases of the program, you must be available for ⅓ to ½ time during regular working hours.


University degree (in sciences, engineering, computer science, etc.) or training certificate (for example, in software development, QA, networking, IT skills, etc.) and/or work experience in a related field.
